2. Socio-Economic Impacts of Climate Change on Regional Communities.
The Australian Government has now accepted that Climate Change is occurring and that governments, business and the community should be developing responses to manage
the variability we expect to occur in our climatic conditions. The Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities is calling for abstracts by 27 February from academics
and practitioner for papers addressing the socio-economic impacts of climate change on regional communities. We will arrange for these papers to be refereed and
presented at a conference on this topic to be held in Bendigo in the middle of 2006. Selected papers will be published in a book by the CSRC. Our aim with the
conference and subsequent publications is to provide direction for the development of socio-economic strategies to cope with the regional impacts of climate change.
For further information on this call for abstracts and the conference please contact Dr Maureen Rogers, Research Fellow, CSRC,

Resources and Networks
1. Drought and the Drought Research Initiative (DRI)
The Drought Research Initiative (DRI) is a research network that brings together many university and federal/provincial government researchers to address this
issue with expertise encompassing the atmospheric, hydrologic, land surface, and predictive aspects of droughts at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. To
make progress on this critical issue, DRI will focus, although not exclusively, on the recent drought over the Prairies. It has been suggested that this was Canada’s
worst natural disaster. Access website
2. An update on U.S. public opinion survey data for 2005 regarding attitudes toward climate change, is now available. The update includes: charts that highlight
key patterns and trends; tables of detailed results from five national surveys; and tables and charts from surveys in the state of California. The update can be
downloaded here
