Archived Update — September, 2005

Greetings from C-CIARN Agriculture,

We have revised a number of resources on our web site.
Check them out

The bibliographic database now contains 665 entries that are relevant for climate change impacts and adaptation. It is in an endnote file that is best downloaded through Microsoft Explorer. Anyone wishing a copy of this file, but unable to get it from our web page, just needs to contact us and we’ll send it directly to them.

Our media database has also been revised to include over 1600 items from January 2002 to June 2005.

Any ideas for how to improve these resources or other aspects of our web site are most welcome. Please contact Ellen Wall (ewall@uoguelph.ca)with your comments and suggestions.

Research Opportunities

BILATERAL RESEARCH COOPERATION WITH NORWAY

This call for proposals encompasses all disciplines and subject areas. The closing date for submitting proposals is October 13.

The Norwegian strategy for S&T cooperation with North America was launched in 2004, in an effort to increase transatlantic R&D cooperation. The Research Council of Norway (RCN) established the Bilateral Research Cooperation initiative and has issued a call for proposals for (i) mobility grants; and (ii) research grants for conducting pre-projects and seed funding to initiate collaborations.

The Leiv Eiriksson Mobility Programme supports Outbound Mobility (from Norway to Canada) and Inbound Mobility (from Canada to Norway). Canadian researchers can access funds through the Inbound Mobility program. Canadian researchers should submit their proposal through their potential host institution in Norway. Support is granted to cover the additional costs of research stays of three to ten months' duration in Norway. Support is granted in the form of a travel subsidy, a monthly grant for operating costs, and a monthly living allowance. Stays of three to ten months in Norway must commence after January 1st, 2006. For further information, please visit the website and/or contact your Norwegian host institution.

Employment Opportunity

Climate Change Specialist
Head of IPCC AR4 Synthesis Report Technical Support Unit

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was set up in 1988 to provide periodic assessments of the current scientific understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and the range of possible response strategies. The IPCC is currently preparing its 4th Assessment Report (AR4) due for publication in 2007. The assessment work of the Panel is divided among three Working Groups (WG), covering climate science, impacts and adaptation, and mitigation. Each of these areas will be assessed in individual volumes. In addition a Synthesis Report (SYR) will be prepared which will draw on each of the three reports and provide a synthesis of all the results and address cross cutting issues. A senior climate change specialist, reporting directly to the Chair of the IPCC, is required to coordinate the production of the SYR. He/she will head a Technical Support Unit (TSU), which will manage the process of producing the SYR.
