Archived Update —

October-November, 2005

Greetings from C-CIARN Agriculture,
Canada is already experiencing the effects of global climate change and incurring costs to adapt to it. Although efforts to move towards stabilization of atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases through emission reductions are important and necessary, it is also recognized that the rate and magnitude of climate change will continue to demand social adaptation strategies to minimize the risks to quality of life. Adaptation therefore is a necessary, and complementary, policy response to climate change mitigation.

(from the Canadian Government Response to the Seventh Report of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The full report is available here)

Adaptation is the focus for the C-CIARN sponsored Parallel Event at COP 11 on Dec 2, 2005.

Living with Climate Change:
Sharing Adaptation Experiences

A session on Food Security, featuring Canadian and international speakers, starts off the day-long event. Opening Address from Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. The full program is available here

Research Funding

SSHRC's recently published strategic plan identifies international research collaboration and the internationalization of research training as one of the Council's four new priorities for action.

SSHRC has launched a new program, the International Opportunities Fund (IOF) , which is expressly designed to help Canadian researchers take advantage of international collaborative opportunities in a timely and flexible manner. Social sciences and humanities researchers affiliated with Canadian postsecondary institutions may apply for $25,000 Development Grants or $75,000 Project Grants at any time. Results will be announced four times a year (January, April, July and October).
