Greetings from C-CIARN Agriculture C-CIARN Agriculture presented its brief to the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, on March 20, 2003. The final report from the senate hearings into climate change is now coming out earlier than first announced (June rather than December, 2003). Contributions from many C-CIARN Agriculture network members will be found in that document.. Our February 25th meeting during Grain World was highly successful. Thanks to all who participated. The written summary of this meeting is underway and will provide an example of the first stage for an “adaptation approach” in climate change research. Producers at our roundtable session informed us about weather and climate conditions that are important for their operations and described how they continue to meet/take advantage of the resulting challenges and opportunities. Their insights, innovation, and determination are very impressive. We all agreed that more needs to be done to document data from practical experience with climate risks and to communicate that information to policy-makers, researchers and other producers. New Climate Change Action Funding is now available for research into water issues. We are told agriculture will follow soon so advise our network members to start preparations. Remember our web site has lists of other funding opportunities (eg. most recent from Manitoba ) and agricultural organizations that might be interested in partnerships. As April begins, C-CIARN Agriculture will start off a new year with a major re-vamping of the web site and renewed commitment to facilitate and promote research into climate change risks and opportunities for the agri-food sector. We look forward to your continuing support and interest.
