Archived Update — January 2003

Greetings from C-CIARN Agriculture

We are just four weeks away from our February 25th Meeting in Winnipeg. Many of you have expressed interest in joining us. There is still room for more so please check out the details and let us know if you will be there. Everyone who plans to attend should register to facilitate plans for room size and refreshments.

The day before our meeting, the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry will be in Saskatchewan to continue with hearings on climate change adaptation issues. Transcripts of the presentations and discussion are available through our office. One message is loud and clear from the Senators. They want to know if rural communities and the sectors that rely on them have the capacity to meet challenges from climate change. What adaptations are needed and how can rural Canadians implement them?

Addressing these questions is a top priority for C-CIARN regions and sectors. They are also implicit in a recent call for a special session on Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change to take place at the Canadian Association of Geographers meetings in Victoria B.C., May 27-31, 2003. Anyone interested in chairing a session or submitting a paper on this topic should contact Randy McLeman(rmcleman@uoguelph.ca) by February 1, 2003.

International reports and studies focusing on vulnerability and adaptation have information relevant to the Canadian experience. A recently released document, Climate Change and Agricultural Vulnerability was produced for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, 2002 and provides a global view.

Another current publication, “Wanted: Scientific Leadership on Climate” makes a very strong case for re-directing research priorities toward action on adaptation. This requires understanding “the needs of decision-makers…, those who deal with climate-related effects on a daily basis” Our C-CIARN Agriculture/Prairies meeting aims to highlight that perspective so that policy and research efforts are as effective as possible. Look forward to seeing many of you there,
